Every litre of petrol sold in New Zealand includes a hidden cost — excise duty. It’s a government tax meant to fund our roads. But here’s the part most businesses don’t know: if you’re using that petrol off-road, you might be eligible for a refund.
What is Excise Duty?
Excise duty is currently 76 cents per litre + GST and applies to all petrol sold. It’s designed to maintain public roads — but if you’re not using those roads, why pay the tax?
Who Can Claim a Refund?
If your business uses petrol in:
- Farming equipment
- Construction machinery
- Generators or pumps
- Marine vessels
- Lawn or garden machinery
…you could be eligible.
How Much Can You Get Back?
You can claim refunds for up to two years back, and continue every quarter after that. Even small volumes (like 10L per week) can result in significant refunds over time.
Don’t leave money on the table. Check your eligibility or use our calculator to estimate your refund.
